The Cunningham Panel™ Animation Released by Understand.com® to Educate Physicians and Families About PANDAS and PANS

October 9th represents PANDAS/PANS Awareness Day.

Understand.com is excited to announce the release of The Cunningham Panel™ animation. Developed by Moleculera Labs™, the Cunningham Panel™ is the first and only series of laboratory tests available to help physicians diagnose and treat the infection-triggered autoimmune disorders known as PANDAS and PANS. This test can help to identify the level of autoimmune antibodies associated with PANDAS and PANS and the capability that these antibodies have to stimulate and trigger neurologic behavior. Elevated levels of these antibodies indicate that a child’s symptoms may be due to an infection-induced autoimmune response.

This custom animation explains the complex molecular processes behind PANDAS and PANS and how the revolutionary Cunningham Panel™ can help physicians in diagnosing these treatable autoimmune conditions.

Understand.com® Releases Spine Animation Library to Educate Patients on Complex Spinal Conditions and Surgical Procedures

A library of medically reviewed animations that can be licensed and accessed on multiple platforms.

Spine Animation Library

Global medical education company Understand.com™ is proud to announce the release of their Spine Animation Library, now available to medical practices and healthcare clinics all over the world. The Spine Animation Library was conceived in conjunction with UnderstandSpineSurgery.com, a patient website dedicated to delivering medical content on spine conditions and treatments. The library consists of over 30 medical animations that accurately and sensitively visualize complex conditions and surgical procedures.

Dr. Jeff Fischgrund, a board certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in spinal surgery, acted as medical advisor in the production and review of the Spine Animation Library. A member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Fischgrund has authored several articles and contributed to textbooks on the topic of spinal surgeries. He has lectured on the subjects of spine trauma and reconstructive surgery, and is a valued instructor to medical students, orthopaedic residents, and spine fellows. With Dr. Fischgrund’s experience and expertise, each animation in the library was developed and reviewed for total accuracy.

SPINE CONDITIONS
Conditions of the spine are explained in detail and include information on how the condition affects normal anatomy, the pathology behind the condition, and treatments used to effectively manage the patient’s symptoms. Animations include examples of spine conditions that are degenerative, congenital, or from trauma, and that describe changes in spine structure and function.

SPINE PROCEDURES
The Spine Library also includes a comprehensive collection of surgical animations that cover techniques for preparing bone grafts and stabilizing the spine; common procedures with and without instrumentation; and a variety of surgical approaches including minimally invasive procedures.

Patients can access the animations from a variety of platforms, from the comfort of home or the convenience of the doctor’s office. The Spine Library animations introduce patients step-by-step to the conditions and procedures that affect them. Visualizing the anatomy and the surgical process allows patients to better understand their condition, and can improve their confidence and increase compliance.

Understand.com® Launches New e-Learning Platform for Medical Device and Pharmaceutical Professionals

Understand.com today announced the launch of its own custom-built e-learning platform, Understand University, designed specifically for medical device and pharmaceutical professionals who need to better understand anatomy, medical procedures, and product training.

Understand University

“Current e-learning platforms used by healthcare companies are sorely inadequate. They are needlessly complex with average content at best. Asking them to create new features or content takes forever and costs a fortune,” said Darik Volpa, Founder and CEO of Understand.com. “Leveraging our existing medical education content, combined with our ability to create custom content makes this a natural extension of our business, and provides a much-needed educational solution for medical professionals.”

With ten years of experience in sales, marketing, and sales training for a Fortune 500 medical device company, Volpa and his technology team set out on a year-long effort to build a new platform that offers an exceptional online learning experience that was different than anything else on the market,” says Volpa. “Putting a PowerPoint online and expecting it to effectively educate users simply doesn’t cut it.”

The initial rollout of Understand University has been met with raving reviews from medical device companies. “I have never had the reception to a new product launch like Understand University. We have already signed six significant licensing agreements before the product was even completed. Large institutional education companies will find this product very disruptive.” says Volpa.

The Understand University e-Learning platform is intuitive to use, so medical device and pharmaceutical representatives can log-in and access a complete dashboard of training tools including course catalogues ranging from such medical topics such as arthroscopy, gynecology and urology to the latest medical video products.

“Many of Apple’s greatest successes were simply improvements on existing products with a sleek and intuitive user interface. We have done this and then populated the platform with Understand’s breadth of original medical content. The system is easy-to-use and highly customizable,” said Ian Berry-Jewett, vice president of technology for Understand.com.

Understand.com® named “Software Company of the Year”

Technology Company Recognized for Growth and Innovation

Understand.com, a global medical education company headquartered in downtown Reno, was one of two technology companies named “Software Company of the Year” by the 2012 NCET Technology Awards and Reno Gazette-Journal Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. These awards recognize companies and individuals that have significantly enhanced the growth and prestige of the technology community.

Nevada Lt. Governor Brian Krolicki will honor Understand.com at an awards event held February 16, 2012 at the Eldorado Hotel & Casino, along with 3G Studios who was also awarded in the category.

Understand.com was honored for its innovative use of 3D animation to educate more than 10 million patients in 150 countries about complex healthcare topics. The company was named by Inc. Magazine in 2010 as one of the country’s fastest growing privately held companies with a three-year average growth rate of 215 percent. Understand.com continued that pace in 2011 by achieving another record year in sales and hiring seven new employees.

Additionally, Understand.com issued three major software releases last year alone:

  • Launch of Understand University, a medical education e-learning platform designed for medical device and pharmaceutical companies to educate users on anatomy and surgery;
  • Creation of “Understand the Knee,” a new 3D multimedia web application that combines High-Definition (HD) animation, surgical video and still images to give patients a complete understanding of the anatomy of the knee; and;
  • Development of U Stock, a digital platform that allows users to license and download content from the world’s most comprehensive collection of medical images for orthopedic and plastic surgery.

“The NCET Technology Awards received a record number of inspiring entries this year, and Understand.com stood out from other nominees due to its unique combination of imagination and corporate responsibility,” said Dave Archer, president and CEO for NCET. “After nine years in business, Understand.com continues to demonstrate a high degree of innovation typically shown by a start-up company. NCET is proud to recognize a company that has contributed so much to building the Northern Nevada technology community.”

“Being recognized for the work the Understand.com team does on a daily basis and the commitment we have for seeing Reno-Tahoe grow as a tech hub, is truly gratifying,” said Darik Volpa, Understand’s founder and CEO.

Understand.com is the driving force behind “Wi-Fi on the River,” a free Wi-Fi network being built in downtown Reno along the Truckee River that is expected to go live early this year. The company also stays involved within the community in other ways including sponsoring NCET’s Governor’s Cup and the Reno Gazette Journals “20 Under 40″ Awards, acting as a “Dream Maker” for the Nevada Discovery Museum, and creating the new Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows website.
